“We’re packing light. Our hosts will take good care of our needs ... .”

— Ron Swift
Troop 81 adult leader

Seeking fun and adventure with a liberal dose of American history, a group of Patterson Boy Scouts will soon leave for two weeks in the Boston area on an exchange program.

Ten Scouts and two adult leaders of Troop 81 will spend July 8 through 22 on the East Coast. They will be hosted by Troop 728 of Reading, Mass., a city comparable in size to Patterson that sits 12 miles north of the center of Boston.

“We are looking forward to it being a fun time for everyone, including our hosts,” explained leader Ron Swift, who initially made contact with the Reading troop. “We are excited, and so are they.”

Planning for the trip began late last year. The Boston area was chosen because the Patterson troop already sent 13 Scouts and five adult leaders to the Washington, D.C., area for 12 days in 2004.

“Some of the boys also have been to D.C. with their eighth-grade classes or when attending the National Scout Jamboree in Virginia,” Swift said. “We looked for something different for this summer.”

The Boston Minuteman Council headquartered in that city spread the word that a troop in a small California city was seeking a host another. Troop 728 soon responded, and the planning began.

The 10 local youths divided themselves into teams of two each to stay in the homes of their hosts, who will take them on a sightseeing tour of Boston, where they will view several historical sites.

On July 11, the Scouts and their host families will take in a Red Sox-Orioles baseball game at historical Fenway Park, with tickets compliments of Dunkin’ Donuts, whose corporate office is in Boston.

All of the Scouts will spend a week at Camp J.T. Storer in southern New Hampshire. Two Patterson boys, brothers Jacob and Zack Nelson, will then join with several Troop 728 Scouts on a five-day, 50-mile canoe trip on a nearby river. The trip will include several portages.

Planning of the day-by-day itinerary in the Boston area, the week at camp and the canoe trip has been completed by coast-to-coast e-mail communication. The Nelsons have been involved in menu selection for their five days on the river.

“We’re packing light,” Swift noted. “Our hosts will take good care of our needs, including transportation.”

Fundraising for the trip is about to conclude and includes the giveaway of a new, motorized four-wheeler, he added.

The plan includes the Patterson Scouts hosting Troop 728 next summer.

“They will go to summer camp with us, and besides day trips that may include Yosemite National Park and San Francisco, we hope they can be here over the Fourth of July, when Patterson begins its centennial celebration,” Swift said.

Aside from the Nelson brothers, those heading to Boston are John Bingham, who has been selected as senior patrol leader for the trip, Davis Freitas, Todd Cornwell, Zachary Days, Caleb and Joshua Martin, Adam Melo and David McCord. They will be accompanied by adult leaders Swift and Dennis McCord.

While part of Troop 81 is on the East Coast, others will spend a week at Camp Wente near Willits.
