Deborah Novelli, publisher and owner of The Patterson Hometown Shopper, will be president of the Patterson Rotary Club for the 2008-09 year.

Officers who will serve with Novelli are Richard Sordello, vice president; Julie Alves, treasurer; Mary Martin, secretary; and Jesse Gallegos, sergeant at arms.

“Besides donating locally, Rotary also is an international organization with clubs in almost every country in the world,” Novelli said. “Rotary’s efforts internationally are helping to wipe out polio and provide wheelchairs to individuals who have never had one.”

On the district level, Rotarians will help farmers in Mexico with new agriculture methods.

Novelli, who has been a Rotarian since 2002, said the club’s primary goal for the upcoming year is to continue helping Patterson individuals and organizations with donations. Some groups the club has helped are West Side Food Pantry and F.A.I.T.H. Food Bank of Stanislaus County, Inc., Patterson Recognizing Individuals Determined to Excel, local Boy Scouts and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Patterson.

Rotarians also donated dictionaries to all third-graders in the Patterson Unified School District this year.

The club raises money through the support of members and fundraisers, such as the annual Rotary Crab Feed and the Apricot Fiesta cocktail party.

Rotarians and local Lions have also faced off in a softball game the past couple of years as a fun way to add to their coffers.

Novelli would like the club to help with a blood drive this year.

The local Rotary has 40 members; new members are welcome. The club meets at noon Wednesdays throughout the year at Las Palmas Grill, 1040 W. Las Palmas Ave., Ste. H. Programs are varied, and the club also sponsors an annual Rotary Club Student Speaker Contest.

“I am excited for this upcoming year and working with the new Rotary officers,” Novelli said.
