“Any time you get to watch a group of athletes in an event like this, it’s exciting.” — Bob Green Rotary All-Star game director ![]() Photo by Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator “We’d give the level of competitiveness two thumbs up, and if I had a third one, I’d put that up, too,” game director Bob Green said. “It’s a tradition.” Still, the North proved to be its own worst enemy, surrendering the ball five times in the first half, including three turnovers on its first five plays from scrimmage. The South took full advantage to score the game’s first 35 points. Friday’s win also gives the South a 13-10 series lead. “Any time you get to watch a group of young athletes in an event like this, it’s exciting,” ![]() Photo by Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator Merced’s Brandon Garcia provided some of the North’s few shining moments. Garcia, who entered the game late in the first quarter, was 8-for-13 in the first half, throwing for 85 yards. He finished the game with 156 passing yards and a touchdown on a 55-yard toss to Pitman’s Matt Staack. ![]() Photo by Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator Despite the lopsided outcome, Green said, post-high school football bears a significance that transcends the scoreboard. “It feels good (for the players) to wear the helmet one more time and to play with a bunch of the high school kids,” Green said. “Some of these guys aren’t going to play football in the future, so it’s nice to play in this last game and to be a part of this.” To reach Marc Aceves at the Irrigator, call 892-6187 or e-mail him at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
