The 23rd annual Rotary All-Star Football Game is history after the South defeated the North, 35-6, on Friday night at Henry Massaro Stadium in Chowchilla. But the consensus among game organizers is that a real rivalry is beginning to brew.

“We’d give the level of competitiveness two thumbs up, and if I had a third one, I’d put that up, too,” game director Bob Green said. “It’s a tradition.”

Still, the North proved to be its own worst enemy, surrendering the ball five times in the first half, including three turnovers on its first five plays from scrimmage.

The South took full advantage to score the game’s first 35 points.

Friday’s win also gives the South a 13-10 series lead.

Green said. “It’s a privilege for them and something they look forward to, to cap their high school careers.”

Merced’s Brandon Garcia provided some of the North’s few shining moments.

Garcia, who entered the game late in the first quarter, was 8-for-13 in the first half, throwing for 85 yards.

He finished the game with 156 passing yards and a touchdown on a 55-yard toss to Pitman’s Matt Staack.

The North featured four local gridiron stars: Patterson High’s Keith Yamamoto, Robby Samano and Johnny Garcia and Central Catholic’s Matt Lawrence.

Despite the lopsided outcome, Green said, post-high school football bears a significance that transcends the scoreboard.

“It feels good (for the players) to wear the helmet one more time and to play with a bunch of the high school kids,” Green said. “Some of these guys aren’t going to play football in the future, so it’s nice to play in this last game and to be a part of this.”
