At a glance
WHAT: City Council meeting
WHEN: 7 p.m. Tuesday
WHERE: Council chambers, City Hall, 1 Plaza

Voters will likely be asked to raise the county’s sales tax by half a percent during November elections.

Patterson City Council will review the measure at a meeting Tuesday.

The Stanislaus Council of Governments has proposed the sales-tax measure as a way to pay for transportation infrastructure, mainly roads.

Patterson stands to receive millions of dollars to work on local roadways if voters give the OK, according to City Manager Cleve Morris. There would also be about $117 million for improvements to West Main Street and improved circulation from Turlock to Interstate 5.

The tax is expected to raise $700 million over its 20-year lifespan.

Voters rejected a similar measure in 2006.

Patterson City Council has supported a transportation sales tax in the past. Council members have said it would make Stanislaus a “self-help” county, which would let it receive more state funding.

However, they have also have expressed concerns that money might support roads for a proposed industrial development in Crows Landing. In that case, several council members said they would withdraw their support.
