Preregistration is open for Friday Fourth of July activities:
Locals can mark their calendars for a Friday filled with old-fashioned fun and games, food and contests. The Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce and the city of Patterson will sponsor a Families in the Park Fourth of July celebration in the downtown parks and on Plaza Circle for folks of every age. “The chamber wants to make this a good, fun, community event,” said Debbie Calcote, chamber secretary. “Just a good, old-fashioned get-together.” Many locals have stepped forward to pitch in, but helping hands are still welcomed. “We’ve had a really huge response already from the community,” said Ellen Calmettes, chamber president. “Of course, we could use more volunteers. We want everyone to enjoy the day. The more volunteers we have, the shorter the shifts, and there will be more time for volunteers to enjoy the events.” The Elijah B. Hayes Post No. 168 American Legion and Auxiliary will open the celebration at 9 a.m. with a short program about Independence Day. A farmers market, featuring local produce for sale, will also begin at that time. The chamber will sell breakfast burritos, pastries and coffee for those who arrive downtown for the opening events. Later on, beginning at 11 a.m., the chamber will sell hot dogs and snacks. Around the circle A Mamas and Me Kids Parade will feature little ones on bikes and trikes and in wagons at 10 a.m. on the downtown circle. Patterson resident Bill Whitfield and the Old Time Fiddlers will be on stage at 11 a.m., followed by a disc jockey who will play music all afternoon. The Patterson Lions Club will cook up a tri-tip barbecue at noon, when craft booths and the information booth will open. American Legion and Auxiliary members will staff an information booth. Chamber members will have booths in the parks, so local folks can find out what merchants have to offer. A skateboard competition will start at 11:30 a.m.; all consent forms and permission slips must be received by the chamber by Thursday for skaters to participate. Skateboarding will be followed by games including gunny-sack races, a water balloon toss, horseshoes, an old-fashioned tug of war and a watermelon-eating contest. Kids can also visit the animals in a petting zoo, and adults can play bingo at U.S. Bank, 13 Plaza, both beginning at 1 p.m. Local cooks are invited to bring their best-baked summer pie and the recipe to the Center Building on the circle between 2 and 2:30 p.m. for the pie-baking contest. Patterson Township Historical Society members will judge the contest. The day will end with dancing in the street on the circle from 6 to 8 p.m. Chamber members say they look forward to the gathering and invite all to head on down. “I’m just so excited about this,” Calmettes said. She said to get lots of folks to come to the all-day event.
