Bad Air Day: Central Valley residents aren’t breathing easy, as more than 700 fires burned in Northern California as of Friday, sending a smoky haze over Patterson and other area communities. Environmental and health officials warn that the sooty air can aggravate medical conditions and advise folks to stay indoors and to limit outdoor exercise.

A spate of thunderstorms last weekend, with as many as 6,000 individual lightning strikes, sparked 700 wildfires in several counties that have smothered the valley in smoky haze, according to Accuweather.com meteorologist Kate Wotring.

As long as the smoke remains in the sky, asthmatics and valley residents who otherwise struggle with breathing are encouraged to stay inside. Airborne soot can get deep into a person’s lungs, according to the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, which can cause acute bronchitis, infections and asthma attacks and can aggravate lung disease.

Not fog: On a clear day, Patterson’s historical Center Building can usually be seen clearly from the end of the rows of palms that line Las Palmas Avenue. On Thursday, residents and drivers could barely make out the Center Building from Hartley Street through the thick haze that has drifted over the valley from Northern California wildfires.
