PHS wrestler heads for the heartland Print E-mail

“This will be my first time really venturing outside of Patterson I think that it will be good for me to get away. I know that I have to do things on my own over there.”

— Adrian Ramirez
PHS graduate

In one of the most touching retirement gestures in sports, wrestlers take off their shoes at center mat and walk away.

Patterson’s Adrian Ramirez has kept his shoes on — at least for now.

Ramirez, a recent graduate of Patterson High, can’t say for sure what his wrestling future has in store for him, but one thing that is certain is his collegiate career at Iowa State University in the fall.

“This will be my first time really venturing outside of Patterson,” Ramirez said. “I think that it will be good for me to get away. I know that I have to do things on my own over there.”

He might not be the most imposing figure, but Ramirez has stood tall ever since donning the crimson-and-gray singlet at Patterson High.

Ramirez finished his senior season at PHS with an appearance in February’s section championships in Stockton.

Though he failed to move on in the competition, his efforts during the tournament neatly wrapped up his four-year high school wrestling career.

Still, Ramirez — the consummate overachiever — wasn’t enamored with his performance.

“I didn’t quite finish off the way that I would have liked to,” Ramirez said.

While he hasn’t decided whether to go out for the Iowa State wrestling team, Ramirez has already declared an academic major.

“I am going to study mechanical engineering,” he said. “I know that I will be able to find a job after graduation with a degree in that area.”

The school, in Ames, Iowa, is a learning institution that strongly focuses on science and technology. A number of astronauts, Nobel laureates and Pulitzer Prize winners have hailed from the university.

Ramirez recently ventured out to Ames — hopping aboard a six-hour flight — to check out the campus for himself.

“Just seeing the school was a great experience,” he said. “It is definitely beautiful out there. Just walking around, it began to occur to me that this was the place that I needed to be.”

Ramirez has already joined up with a fraternity.

“I’ve played sports for the past four years,” he said. “A fraternity is the same idea. They are a group of guys that know the school and can help me to get started out when I get there.”

He acknowledged both his parents and his coaches as motivating figures that helped guide him toward academic success.

And when Ramirez will make his decision whether to keep his grappling shoes on?

“I will know by the end of the year whether or not I will continue to wrestle,” Ramirez said. “I am always training. I will probably at least do some intramural wrestling.”

“I only want to attempt it if my heart and drive is in it.”
