Patterson Recycling Center may face new recycling rules if the City Council heeds the advice of Stanislaus County Supervisor Jim DeMartini.
At an Aug. 7 council meeting, DeMartini asked that the council adopt the county’s recycling laws to cut down on scrap metal thefts.
If the council agrees, anyone who takes scrap metals to the Patterson Recycling Center on North First Street would be fingerprinted.
The center also would compile a list of all items it bought and the names of the sellers. That list would go to Patterson Police Services by noon the following day.
If the rules pass, they would be the second new set handed down to Patterson Recycling Center this year. In January, the planning commission created new recycling rules, also with the hopes of curtailing scrap metal thefts.
Because Patterson Recycling Center is the only recycler in town that accepts metals other than aluminum, it is the only business affected by such regulations.
In other council matters:
- The council will set a date for a public forum about police harassment, reported at two previous City Council meetings.
- Council members will consider paying Citygate Associates $54,650 to look at whether combining the city’s fire department and West Stanislaus Fire District would save the agencies money.
- The council will review a quarterly report from PCCP West Park to the county board of supervisors. West Park hopes to develop the former U.S. Navy airfield between Patterson and Crows Landing and the surrounding area into a 7.5-square-mile industrial center. On Tuesday, West Park officials presented a project update to the board of supervisors.
