![]() Oliver ![]() DeVaughns Theresa Oliver, aka Adanna Bahati, 38, and Audrey Devaughns, 39, were booked into Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on June 9 on suspicion of identity theft, possession of stolen property and burglary. “It’s definitely probably one of the largest (identity theft cases) I’ve dealt with,” said Detective Michael Fisher of Patterson Police Services. Oliver was released on $25,000 bail June 9, and Devaughns was released on the same bail June 11. The two were arrested during a warrant search at their house on Oasis Lane in a gated community in the Patterson Gardens development in southwestern Patterson. Detectives recovered several home appliances that the women reportedly had bought fraudulently at Lowe’s in Los Banos. In addition, they said they found fake California ID cards and checks to match. Police said they also found items that could be used to make fake ID cards and blank checks with other people’s personal information. Most people appear to be from the Bay Area, Fisher said. For male victims, the first name was typically changed to sound like a female name, Fisher said. The names of two other unknown female suspects also were found on some IDs, he said. The search warrant last week was related to an initial report made at Sears in Patterson on May 9. Two women entered the store, at 611 S. Second St., and bought items using fake ID cards and matching checks. At that time, one Patterson resident had a check stolen from near the register, police said. Fisher said the two women bought a television set and a vacuum cleaner at the store, totaling about $1,527. A representative from the Sears store, who did not wish to give her name because of fear of retaliation, said she had a bad feeling about the checks she received and asked a friend who worked at Bank of the West to tell her whether the check account number matched the name of the person who had issued the check. When the friend said it did not, the Sears representative notified police. Devaughns reportedly went to the store May 18 to ask for a refund for the television. Employees at the store stalled her, and someone at the store called police, the Sears representative said. Police searched Devaughns’ car in front of the store and found other people’s personal information inside before arresting her. The Sears worker said Devaughns hid her identification, which had her real name on the signature and a fake name printed on the card, in her bosom.
Detectives say they also have learned that Oliver and Devaughns had purchased items worth about $2,500 at the Los Banos Lowe’s on May 7 and made $650 in purchases at Wal-Mart in Los Banos.
