Depend on Pepper to add spice to life Print E-mail

Saying the word “pepper” in my house carries a totally different connotation than in most other American households. It is typically thought of as the stuff you put on eggs and sandwiches, but not in my house. If you say “pepper,” everyone immediately remembers a little black-and-white shih tzu-mix dog who was so hyperactive, she put the local cheer squad to shame.

Perky pup: Pepper, a young shih tzu mix, brightened up the Hamilton family’s life with her spicy antics.
I got Pepper in fifth grade, and when we first brought her home, we thought she was a really good dog. Unfortunately, we forgot that she was still drugged from being spayed. When the drugs wore off, we got a rude awakening.

I would typically let Pepper into my room when I got home from school. On one such day, I left my dirty laundry on the floor by accident. I also made the mistake of getting her excited. In her excited state, she grabbed a pair of my underwear between her teeth and took off running toward the stairs. Pepper was lightning-quick, making it impossible for me to catch her before she got downstairs.

On that particular day, my brother was giving a guitar lesson in our living room, which was right at the bottom of the stairs. That’s right where Pepper headed. Naturally, once in the living room she paused to shake and throw her head around with my underwear clenched between her teeth — basically beating herself on the sides of the head with it.

Just as I was about to grab her, she took off running again. Thankfully, our kitchen had slippery hardwood floors, so she got tripped up there, and I caught her.

That was not the only hilarious incident that transpired while Pepper was with us. Sadly, Pepper died at the youthful age of five. But I have no doubt she is at this very moment sitting in doggy heaven chewing on an endless supply of underwear.
