25 years ago — Sept. 2, 1982
Three Patterson Boy Scouts and their scoutmaster last week completed a 1,400-mile trip, including travels to Lassen National Park and Lava Beds National Monument, across southern Oregon and down the California coast. Mike Sierra, Jeff Farrar, David Carpenter and Scoutmaster Ron Swift all enjoyed the trip.
The annual community drive to raise money to transport Patterson High School athletes to out-of-town sporting events is now under way. Last year, supporters raised more than $7,200.
Former Patterson High football player Mario Martinez is seeking local residents interested in joining the Stanislaus Rugby Club.


50 years ago — Aug. 29, 1957
That loud booming noise heard by Pattersonites is not the sound of a jet plane breaking the sound barrier. It’s caused when the afterburner of an F8U Crusader fighter jet is ignited by pilots practicing at the Crows Landing Navy Base. The Crusader holds the speed record of 1,178 mph.
Manuel Mendes is grand knight of the local Knights of Columbus council.
A local chapter of Children’s Home Society is trying to organize here.
A new state law requires party line telephone users to relinquish the line to others during emergencies.


75 years ago — Sept. 2, 1932
The Hotel Del Puerto is temporarily closed after Mrs. A.M. Gamble gave up managing it after several years of operating the hotel. A new leasee is being sought. The Gambles have rented the Frank Cox house on North Fifth Street.
The Patterson High Class of 1932 expects 23 of its 52 members who graduated in June to continue their education. Twelve will attend Modesto Junior College, two will train for nursing careers, and nine will attend colleges and universities.
High school students will begin classes Monday, despite it being the Labor Day holiday.
Night baseball began in Patterson on Tuesday evening when 18 floodlights were erected behind the Masonic Hall and Patterson Irrigator buildings.
Pork roasts were on special this week for 14 cents a pound at the Patterson Market.
