Photo by Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator Any parent knows the secret to keeping most kids happy — and occupied for hours — is to turn them loose to play in water. Fortunately, the aquatics center provides a summer mecca for children from tots to teens, and for fun-loving grown-ups, too. “Most of our students take full advantage of the pool once school lets out,” said Las Palmas Elementary School activities coordinator Jean Wiersema, who was on hand Friday to help parents and faculty supervise a jubilant bunch of third-graders. “They love to swim, and they have a blast doing it.” The aquatic center is in full splash mode, offering open-swim times, water aerobics classes, swimming lessons and everything in between. Patterson’s aquatic center is entering its third season as the place to be on hot, muggy summer days. To escape the inevitable summer boredom — and 100-degree heat — the center has compiled a full schedule of its favorite wet and wild summer activities. Gone are the days when going to the pool simply meant just jumping into it. Kids want to use their imagination, splash about in fountains and dance with the water. And the aquatic center is ready to give them what they want. Seven days a week, the center offers open-swim time for aquatic enthusiasts of all ages to frolic about in the pool. For adults who prefer to have the pool to themselves, the center also offers an adult and senior swim. ![]() LADIES IN THE WATER: Local women participate in the evening water aerobics session Wednesday at Patterson Aquatic Center, one of the many programs offered there. Photo by Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator Interested? Patterson High student Lyndzie Garro instructs a pair of water aerobics classes, including one specifically targeted for seniors. Garro, who has a background as both a cheerleader and a competitive swimmer, worked as a lifeguard for the aquatic center last year. “I’ve been trained in all the necessary techniques and programs,” Garro said. “Right now, the typical senior aerobics class is about 15 people. At night, the class size grows to about 20 people.” Garro’s classes focus on exercising different parts of the body during a weekly series of workouts. “Mondays we work arms, Tuesdays we do legs, Wednesdays is cardio and on Thursdays our focus is on abs,” she said. “Different people come on different days to do target workouts.” Learning to swim is a vital skill for both children and adults, not only for safety reasons but also so they can take full advantage of summer swim opportunities. The center offers swimming lessons for all age groups.
