Patterson hosts inaugural AAU basketball tourney Print E-mail

The Patterson Lakers hosted the city’s first Amateur Athletic Union basketball tournament June 7 and 8 at the Patterson High gymnasium.

The Patterson Lakers Fiesta Tournament — which organizers hope will become an annual affair — attracted five teams, traveling from as far away as Stockton.

Each team was divided into three sub-squads: boys 12-years and under, boys 13-years and under, and boys 14-years and under.

While the host Lakers failed to see one of its three teams finish atop the pack during the two-day tournament, head coach Tim Shaw still considered the weekend’s festivities a success.

“We’ve waited six years to finally hold this event at home,” Shaw said. “Some of the valley’s best clubs came here to play, and it was a really competitive tournament.”

The Lakers’ 12-and-under team finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.

The team’s two wins came against Atwater Alley-Oop, 43-40 and 45-24.

Shaw praised the play of John Minton and Justin Chavez.

Minton led the team in scoring throughout the weekend and averaged six steals per game.

The Valley Terriers of Stockton claimed top honors in the 12-and-under age group.

The Lakers’ 13-and-under squad finished 1-2 in its games. Their lone victory came against the Manteca Nuggets, 66-55.

The Alley-Oop won the age division.

A trio of Lakers — Tyler Walker, Adam Cortez and Richard Garcia — traded roles as the team’s leading scorer, rebounder and steals leaders. Garcia also pulled down an average of 18 boards per contest.

The Lakers 14-and-under team — cobbled together just a week before the tournament — showed that it is still learning to gel as a unit.

The boys dropped all three games.

Patterson’s Jewan Jackson was heralded, however, by Shaw for his exemplary play.

Stockton’s Delta Fastbreak came away with first place.

“I think that all of our teams did well,” Shaw said. “As for the tournament, I heard nothing but good feedback. Hopefully, next year we can host it again.”
