The California Highway Patrol is searching for a driver they think was involved in an accident at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday at Crows Landing and West Main roads.

Michael Betancourt, 21, of Patterson, had minor injuries after rolling his 2007 Pontiac G5, said CHP spokesman Tom Killian.

Betancourt had been traveling east at about 80 mph when he moved into the westbound lane to pass other vehicles.

That’s when a black-and-white late 1980s Ford pickup traveling east in front of Betancourt also moved into the westbound lane, causing Betancourt to swerve to avoid hitting the truck. Police suspect the four-door, dual-axel pickup was either an F250 or an F350. Anyone with information can call CHP officer Sharon Milne, 545-7440, ext. 508.

Police do not consider the Ford driver to be a suspect in a hit-and-run, but they would like to talk with the driver about what happened.

“We’re unsure if (the driver’s) even aware he was involved in an accident,” Killian said.

After Betancourt swerved to avoid the Ford, his car struck a telephone pole and a house along the side of the road. A power line fell close to the Pontiac, preventing emergency responders from reaching Betancourt for about 10 minutes.

After Turlock Irrigation District workers cut the power, emergency responders got Betancourt into an ambulance and to a hospital.
