Rudeness spoils graduation EDITOR, The headline for your story on Patterson High School’s recent graduation story could not have been more appropriate! (“A noisy send-off for Class of ’08,” Page 3, May 31.) It was definitely “a noisy sendoff.” I could not believe the rudeness of some of the families and friends in the stands. The use of airhorns, which were prohibited, turned this ceremony into a fiasco. The people rude enough to sit there and blow these horns throughout the ceremony made it impossible for many families to hear their child’s name being called. It was also very hard on the ears of people sitting around them. It was not as if they just tooted the horn once and stopped; they felt it necessary to blow their horns several times for each graduate they knew. High school graduation is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, yet it was marred for many families because of the rudeness of others. I kept waiting for the principal or superintendent to stand up, stop the handing out of diplomas and request that people follow the rules and stop using the airhorns. Unfortunately, the administration did nothing to try to stop the noise. They also did not pause before reading the next name if an airhorn was going off; they just continued reading, ruining the ceremony for families unable to hear their child’s name being called. I was also appalled by the remarks of the principal when he pointed out that graduates had come from many different places. Why couldn’t he just say that there were “graduates from many countries and cities?” Why was it necessary to specifically name only the cities of San Jose and Oakland, along with the many foreign countries named? I am sure there are students at Patterson High School who were born and raised in numerous cities around the U.S. and Calfornia. As San Jose and Oakland were named, the whoops and hollers from the audience grew progressively louder, and gang signs were flashed by several people in the audience around where I was sitting. This comment by the principal was obviously not very well thought out. Last, why should the ceremony start as late as 8 p.m.? Did the administration even think about out-of-town guests and the fact that many had to be at work the next morning after traveling long distances for the ceremony? Some changes need to be made before next year’s ceremony, or it will be just as disappointing as this year’s. Karen Parks, Patterson
