25 years ago — June 9, 1983
Sixteen-year-old Theresa Hesling was crowned the 13th Miss Apricot at Friday night’s pageant.

Deemed unsafe, the First Southern Baptist Church at Del Puerto Avenue and E Street will soon be razed.

A new chapel is planned, but the congregation will use the adjacent fellowship hall until it is built.

Patterson High junior Marc Lovato has been selected to attend the Chicano Youth Leadership Conference in Sacramento.

Jerry Noah and Craig Goodman will be the student speakers at the junior high promotion exercises, where the eighth-grade class numbers 149. The two lead the class in academics.

50 years ago — June 5, 1958
City employees were voted an across-the-board pay raise of $20 a month when the City Council approved Patterson’s 1958-59 budget. The budget totals just less than $135,000.

Burta Houk, a 1955 graduate of Patterson High School, has been hired to teach fifth grade at Las Palmas School starting in the fall. John Azevedo Jr. will begin his teaching career at the high school, handling the cadet program and teaching U.S. history.

High school students with perfect attendance this school year are Donna Carlson, Patsy Dunn, Marlene Correia, David Abbott, Roger Bloom, Adelle Nelson, Alfred Stehli, George Spradling and Darryl Dennis.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wong were honored at a reception at the Wayland Fink residence. The couple was married in September in Hong Kong.

Dave Gray has announced a grand opening of the newly added banquet room at Mil’s Drive In.

One of the largest high-altitude meteorological balloons ever launched in this country soared into the air Thursday at the Balloon Development Laboratory at the site of the former Vernalis Naval Air Station.

75 years ago — June 9, 1933
A capacity turnout is expected tonight when Patterson Union High School graduates 31 seniors. Grayson School will graduate 14 eighth graders, with Stewart and Stanley Cox scheduled to present a piano duet.

Stewart also will give an address, titled “A Century of Progress.”

Las Palmas School graduated 31 eighth-graders.

Plans are being launched by the American Legion for the community’s second Horsethief Bend celebration next fall.

West Side Rural Fire District directors have decided to charge nonmembers of the association $25 for each fire call. Membership is $5 a year per ranch or farm.
