Patterson Mayor Becky Campo announced she will seek a second term while giving the commencement speech for the Patterson Apricot Fiesta on Friday.

Campo has served in Patterson’s city government for more than a decade. She has been mayor since a landslide victory in 2006, when Patterson politics newcomer Victor Slonksnis. She became Patterson’s first Latina mayor when she took office.

“We have a lot of things we need to stay focused on,” Campo said Monday.

This year, she will run against Luis Molina, an elected trustee for the Stanislaus County Office of Education and appointee on Patterson’s planning commission.

“People have the opportunity to choose who is going to be a positive leader,” Molina said Monday.

Local activist Mike Anderson has also talked about running, though he has not made an official announcement. Anderson, who has gained a name around town by volunteering to remove graffiti, said Tuesday he was upset that Campo used the opening speech at the fiesta to announce her candidacy.

“I was more surprised at the venue than that she announced,” he said. “We have to be fair, and it wasn’t fair.”

Campo said she decided to run about a week ago after discussions with her family. Another term in office would prevent her from moving to a house she owns a little outside city limits.

In the 2006 election, she first said she might have to shorten her term so she could move, but later promised that if elected, she would serve out her term. She made the same promise this year.

Following Molina’s campaign announcement in February, Campo said she would run if the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors continued with plans to turn 4,800 acres on and around the Crows Landing Air Facility into an industrial park. Supervisors voted 4-1 to move forward with those plans in April.

Campo and other City Council members have opposed the county’s plans.

The proposed development,  PCCP West Park, will be one of the major issues of the campaign, Campo said.

“We need continuity,” she said. “We need someone who can stay focused on West Park.”

Molina countered that the mayor should focus on a multitude of issues facing the city.

The next mayor also will wrestle with revisions to Patterson’s general plan, Campo said. The City Council is in the midst of rewriting the document that is the blueprint for long-term growth.

“We need consistency on the general plan,” Campo said.

The mayoral elections are more than five months off, and more candidates could decide to step forward. Candidates must wait until July 14 before they can file for office, and the filing period will last until Aug. 8.
