Stanislaus County Supervisor Jim DeMartini and state Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Atwater, both will keep their seats after the incumbents received landslide victories on Tuesday. More than three-fourths of voters — a total of 76 percent — in Denham's 12th Senate District opposed a recall campaign to oust the senator.
Only about 22.4 percent of Stanislaus County voters favored the recall. The recall got
as much as 38 percent of voter support in Monterey County and as low as 16 percent in Merced County. The recall intially received financial backing from Sen. President Pro-Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland, who did not like the fact that Denham voted against last year's state budget, before Perata later decided to call off the effort. However, the recall maintained some support from a few Stanislaus County activists.
Denham called the results a great victory, though he said there was still much work ahead. He cited the current budget deficit, water storage and the loosening of regulations on business among his priorities.
