Trim trees to weather the weather

EDITOR,

The high winds that we all recently experienced are a grim reminder of how vulnerable our city trees are to Mother Nature. There were many tree casualties throughout the city, including in my front yard.

While the city’s current tree-trimming methods produce tall, stately trees, they do little, if anything to promote a strong tree that can withstand violent weather.

I have long advocated that the older trees in town have between 15 feet and 20 feet trimmed from their long, straggly, unstable branches. This would promote a stronger tree base and eliminate long, weak branches that are more susceptible to breakage in strong winds. By doing so, damage to homes and property from breaking branches would decrease, as would the need for city crews to be out for extended amounts of time, tending to “emergency” situations.

I would invite those who are skeptical of this plan to examine the trees on west North Seventh Street, just north of Las Palmas Avenue. They were trimmed in this manner just two or three years ago (by a utility company, I believe) and today look strong and healthy and have filled in very nicely.

I believe that our city trees are an asset that needs to be preserved and taken care of. To promote this plan would be a benefit to all — even in more ways than I have taken the time to list.
