25 Years Ago — June 2, 1983
Directors of the Patterson Apricot Fiesta have selected C.C. “Corky” Bessey to serve as this year’s parade grand marshal. The former mayor and retired auto dealer served as general chairman of the fiesta in 1974 and 1981.

The 13th annual Apricot Fiesta will get under way tonight (Thursday) and will conclude Saturday evening with a community dance after a fireworks display. Other activities at the community stadium that evening will be youth games, a tug-of-war contest and entertainment. Last year’s Miss Apricot, Yvonne Vela, will crown a new queen Friday night from among seven vying for the title.

50 Years Ago — May 31, 1958
A civil defense route is now being used as an argument for getting the Del Puerto Canyon Road from Patterson to San Jose into the state highway system. The improved roadway has been discussed since 1929.

Patterson High will graduate 55 next week, with Gene Thornton giving the valedictory address and Shirley Silva the salutatory address. Class speaker will be Joyce Thorkelson. Merwyn Flowers is the class president.

Rising Sun School at Vernalis will graduate nine, including Kathy Ryan, Generose Patello, Melinda Johnson, Linda Burnett, Roseann Abbott, Shirley Kirkendoll, John Duarte, Odis Steadman and Jerry McLaughlin.

75 Years Ago — June 2, 1933
Patterson’s community swimming pool is about to open, thanks to volunteer work in getting it into shape. Again this year, swimmers will use the facility without charge.

Bringing home first-place honors from the 4-H Club Fair in Ceres last Saturday were Peter Grischott, Manuel Mendes, Ernest Rose and Anthony Mattos, with the latter two also earning grand champion honors with their lambs and rabbits, respectively.

Joe Souza has been elected president of the student body at Patterson High for the coming year. Esther Garett is the new secretary, and Helen Jean Torvend will be the dramatic manager.
