Six Tigers smell state tournament but can't cash in on a windy day in Sacramento

Ronyea Ellington high jump

Rebecca Freres 4x100 relay, triple jump

Amber Bond 4x100 relay, 100 meters

Amanda Moreno 3,200 meters

Krista Loughman 4x100 relay

Jessica Ladd 4x100 relay

SACRAMENTO — On a windy, cool spring afternoon, Patterson High track and field head coach Shellie Freres sat trackside, eagerly anticipating her star high jumper’s final attempt to clear the 6-feet, 6-inch mark.

A successful jump for the Tigers’ Ronyea Ellington would have sent the athlete off to compete in the State Championships in Southern California on Saturday.

Instead, one of the feel-good stories of the PHS track season was left not feeling so great.

Ellington launched his body skyward but could not clear the bar cleanly.

The 6-foot-2 junior — probably the Tigers’ top state hopeful at Thursday’s tournament — rose from the mats in disappointment.

But Freres wasn’t about to allow Ellington to hang his head for too long.

Instead, she says the 2008 Patterson track team will be remembered as a string of successes, culminating with a handful of gifted athletes representing the team during Thursday’s competition.

The Tigers sent six of their top athletes up Interstate 5 to Hughes Field for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Division III Masters Tournament.

Ellington was joined by Rebecca Freres, Amanda Moreno, Amber Bond, Krista Loughman and Jessica Ladd.

While none emerged victorious in any particular event, there was by no means any shame in falling to the level of competition represented at Hughes Stadium, where some of the state’s finest track and field performers held sway.

Freres, Bond, Loughman and Ladd had qualified for Thursday’s competition by clocking a time of 52.74 seconds in the girl’s 4x100-meter relay at sections May 13.

The foursome will be remembered as Patterson’s first 4x100 relay squad to make it all the way to master’s competition.

Moreno also qualified for Thursday’s 3,200-meter affair with a time of 12:28.92 on May 13.

Bond — one of two Tigers to compete in dual events at the competition — qualified for the tourney with a 12.88-second finish in the girl’s 100-meter dash.

Freres’ mark of 34-feet, 11-inches was good enough to send her to the tournament in the girls triple jump.

Patterson can also hang its hat on a variety of team success stories, including a pair of Western Athletic Conference titles for both its varsity boys and JV squads.

As for Ellington, he will return to the team next season, more experienced and no doubt ready to challenge for a trip back to the promised land.

Tack on a few title-hungry members from this season’s championship JV team, and it would appear that the Tigers may be in an excellent position to make yet another run at a WAC crown.
