At a glance
Following is an early list of events planned to celebrate Patterson’s 100th year in 2009:

July 4 weekend
  • Dinner-dance
  • Family picnic
  • Farm equipment show
  • Mural unveiling

Labor Day
  • Plaque unveiling
  • Multiyear high school reunion
  • Historical pageant

With less than a year before Patterson celebrates its 100th birthday, the City Council has committed $30,000 to make the party one to remember.

Members of Patterson’s Centennial Committee asked that the city cover a large chunk of their expected costs for Fourth of July and Labor Day celebrations, and the council obliged with a 4-0 vote.

Some of the expected events include a dinner-dance, a mural contest and a multiyear Patterson High School reunion.

In all, organizers expect the centennial shindig to run about $81,000, though a representative said the committee would not request any more money from the council.

“My personal mission with this adventure is to help people show off their heritage,” said centennial chairwoman Jennifer West.

The centennial is a celebration of the town’s founding in September 1909, according to the committee’s Web site, www.patterson100.org. That’s when T.W. Patterson, the town’s namesake, told W.W. Cox to harvest the grain so he could lay out the town.

Ten years later, the town incorporated. Centennial members had some worries before the council’s vote Tuesday, because some people think the incorporation date, not the founding, should be used as the city’s birth year. Official city documents read “Established 1919,” as do city vehicles. However, the 50-year and 75-year celebrations both used the 1909 date, and the issue was never raised during the meeting.

The only issue that did arise was that the council wanted to make sure it had adequate oversight of its contribution. Once the committee agreed to give regular reports to the city’s finance department, probably once a month, the council got on board.
