25 years ago — May 26, 1983
Apricot growers have agreed to a 1983 price of $285 a ton for Blenheim, Westley and Patterson varieties. Statewide, the crop is estimated at 110,000 tons, reduced by a lack of pollination and rains in March and April.

Local grower Lauren Campbell has been re-elected for a third term as chairman of the California Apricot Advisory Board. Other board members are Justin A. Traina, James Mahaffey, Bruno Riccoboni, Wayne Brooks, Peter Lucich, Gene Bays, Edward Lara and Peter Dompe.

The local chamber of commerce has donated $3,000 to build backstops and dugouts for the youth baseball program.

The 40th anniversary of the opening of the Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Landing Field was observed this week. It opened May 25, 1943, and since then has recorded nearly 1.4 million landings and takeoffs. Soon after opening, 250 aircraft were dispatched to the training facility.

50 years ago — May 22, 1958
Elected this week to local school board positions were John Jeans, Harold Thorkelson, Lewis Washburn, Joe Azevedo, Leonard Patello and Jack Vizzolini.

The Merced County committee on school district reorganization had a final meeting on consolidation of the Patterson, Newman and Gustine school districts. The 6-2 vote was in favor of the change, with Patterson and Gustine voting against. The issue now moves on to the Stanislaus County committee.

Patterson High’s swim team this past week posted wins over Hughson, Los Banos and Newman. Local school trustees have decided that a requirement to pass a swim test to receive a graduation diploma will be discontinued.

75 years ago — May 26, 1933
Apricot growers in this area met in Patterson Wednesday evening to set a wage scale and discuss a marketing pool. Wages were set the same as last year — picking at 17.5 cents per hour or 6 cents per box and cutting at 7 cents per box.

Patterson High’s yearbook, the Del Puerto, was distributed this week. Despite the Depression period, which has kept the yearbook staff busy raising finances, the well-printed and illustrated volume was warmly received.

Patterson High commencement will be June 9. The senior class roll of 32 includes Burdella Anderson, Marie Busengdal, Evelyn Carlson, Gladys Carr, Bernadine Coyle, Stella Daily, Joe Eikenberry, Maurice Friedrich, George Gordon, Harry Germolus, Lucy Hanell, Vernon Hansen, Erma Hurd, Hildur Johnson, Edna Larson, Anna Long, Albert Mortenson, Alvin Ohlson, Effie Palmgren, Luella Peterson, Janet Roberts, Bernita Reinike, Martha Schaub, Rose Signorotti, Margaret Soares, John Soares, Glenn Spoerlein, Jack Stewart, Ada Storch, Mary Tschantz and Kathryn Tschantz.
