“It’s awesome to be taking as many athletes as we are to masters.” — Shellie Freres, Patterson High track and field coach MODESTO — The Patterson High School track team will be well-represented at next week’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Division III Masters Tournament at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento. Patterson displayed 18 of its top athletes during Tuesday and Thursday’s sections tournament at Modesto Junior College, and six qualified for the next level of competition. “Overall, it’s been a great season,” Patterson coach Shellie Freres said. “It’s awesome to be taking as many athletes as we are to masters. I am very proud of all these kids.” The Tiger boys — fresh off claiming the Western Athletic Conference championship — will send junior Ronyea Ellington to masters as their sole representative. ![]() Patterson High freshman Thomas Dodd sets a personal record by clraring the 11-foot, 6-inch bar. Ellington leaped 6 feet, 6 inches in the high jump Tuesday, a mark that proved good enough for both a first-place nod and an at-large bid to Sacramento. Patterson senior Rebecca Freres will also move on in the girls triple jump. Freres’ distance of 34-11 earned her second place overall Tuesday, as well as the right to challenge at masters. Teammate Amber Bond earned masters spots in multiple events. ![]() Patterson's Josh Ham (center) sprints down the lane in the boys 100-meter dash. Bond will race in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints after clocking in Tuesday with times of 12.91 and 27.18 seconds, respectively. She will join Freres, Jessica Ladd and Krista Loughman in the 4x100-meter relay at masters. They qualified with a sixth-place time of 52.74 — a record for the foursome. Patterson’s Amanda Moreno crushed her previous personal-best time by more than 20 seconds in the girl’s 3,200-meter run. Moreno gritted through the 2-mile event to a post fifth-place time of 12:28.92. ![]() Emmanuel Brooks, filling in for teammate Robby Samano, takes the baton from first-leg runner Ham in the boys 4x100 meter relay. Only the top six qualifiers in each event made it through to the masters tournament. In several heartbreakers, the Tigers tallied four seventh-place finishes Thursday, including a noteworthy performance by the boy’s 4x100 relay team.
