Eight-year-old Ronnie Smith is at it again.

Patterson’s resident skateboarding prodigy recently recorded a successful second-place finish at Cameron Park, competing in the California Amateur Skateboard League’s Minis competition.

The Sacred Heart Catholic School third-grader is ranked third in the league’s Northern California division.

“When I watch Ronnie skate, my knees just buckle,” his mother, Annette Smith, said. “It’s not because I’m worried about his ability to pull off his tricks, but more because there is an incredible grace to what he can do on a skateboard.”

Smith, who is also a Patterson city councilwoman, helped start the Skate Park Focus Group of Patterson. This week, that group was given the OK to pursue grants on the construction of a skate park in Patterson.

“Money is available for this project,” Smith said. “We now have something in place for our group to be able to seek these grants. We can start looking at numbers and filling in details for grant requests.”

Ronnie Smith — also a regular at City Council meetings — just wants a safe and legal place where he and his friends can enjoy their sport.

“We’re trying to organize a float for the upcoming Apricot Fiesta,” his mother said. “A lot of the kids already know about this. It would be great for the community to see just how many kids want to skate.”

The third-grader next competes at Oroville’s street and mini-ramp deck tech competition Saturday, one of two events left on the CASL schedule before July’s 2008 California State Games in San Diego.

He will compete alongside his 15-year-old brother, Aaron Mosier.

“It would appear that this sort of thing is in the blood,” Annette Smith said.
