City could select skate park designer Print E-mail

The Patterson City Council will decide if it is willing to invest in designing a skate park at its meeting Tuesday.
City staff has presented the council with three bids to design a park near the aquatic center, 1025 W. Las Palmas Ave., with prices ranging from $32,900 to $77,220. The parks and recreation department suggests the council go with the middle bid for $69,400 from Wally Hollyday Design.

If the council approves, it will be the first money the city has spent to make the park a reality, aside from the staff hours already devoted to the project.

The proposed project has drawn large support from local skaters, who have flooded the council chambers every time the issue has been discussed. However, the majority of the project’s costs, an estimated $500,000, will need to raised before any designs can be implemented.

Supporters have said they will seek grant money, but so far no funding has been identified.

In other council matters
The council will consider funding a community youth employment program, which would provide $42,000 to subsidize employment for local teens.
