25 years ago — May 19, 1983
Local police officer Joe Camarda has a new partner named Bruin, a Rottweiler, after the department’s first patrol dog, a German shepherd named Samson, washed out because he was “just a lover.”
Patterson’s old fire horn, which now blows only at 5 p.m. when activated by answering service owner Betty Emmons, may soon glide into history. The fire department switched to radio communication some time ago.
Dorothy Reis has been tapped as president of the Patterson Garden Club, and Barbie La Torre will be installed as honored queen of the local Job’s Daughters chapter.
Patterson’s Secret Witness program is offering $450 for information about three local criminal activities. Informants will remain anonymous.
Patterson High School junior Nancy Silva has earned All-League softball honors, while juniors Karen Cardoza and Sally Gill and freshman Debbie Guzman were named to the second team.

50 years ago — May 15, 1958
Walter Frank will soon be the new president of the Patterson Lions Club, succeeding Tom Lawson. Harold Blythe will be the new American Legion commander.
Two local people, including a 2-month-old infant, were killed when the vehicle they were riding in collided with a freight train at the Las Palmas Avenue and the Southern Pacific tracks. The accident occurred Monday about mid-morning. The train was going a reported 30 mph.
A gas well about 18 miles north of Patterson in the Vernalis area is reported to be commercially productive.
Gene Thornton is the first president of the newly organized Edna M. Monson Pre-Professional Students Club at Patterson Union High School.
Bobby Mears has been elected into the Order of the Arrow, a national Boy Scout honor organization.

 


75 years ago — May 17, 1933
The national and state farm relief programs recently enacted are the greatest advances ever made for aiding agriculture, according to California Farm Bureau Federation President R.W. Blackburn. He spoke Tuesday night before a turnout crowd at the local Farm Center.
Farm commodity prices continue to turn the corner upward, with dairy, the Patterson area’s foundation industry, leading the way.
Adoption of the West Side highway into the state secondary road system awaits only the governor’s signature.
The Rev. H.J. Thorpe, pastor of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, will soon become the new pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in San Francisco.
