Boys varsity and JV teams capture WAC titles The Patterson High track team continued to scorch the competition at Thursday’s Western Athletic Conference meet at Patterson Community Stadium. The Tigers — fresh off claiming rights to the varsity boys and JV team WAC crowns — qualified 18 athletes to compete at sections this year. The Tigers were led not just by familiar standouts, but also by a pack of young newcomers who were pulled up from the JV squad to compete alongside their veteran teammates. Patterson senior Josh Ham earned a spot at this year’s sections meet in both the boys 100- and 200-meter events. ![]() Running the boys 4x100 relay race, Patterson's Ramone Ellington sprints ahead of teammate Josh Ham as he gets ready to pass off the baton. Ham and Samano will be joined by brothers Ronyea and Ramone Ellington as members of the Tigers’ qualifying boys 4x100 relay team. Ronyea, the older of the siblings, also leaped an impressive 6 feet, 7 inches in the boys high jump, earning him a spot in sections play. Patterson’s Imani Brown and Andre Jones each also earned a spot at sections in the boys high jump and triple jump, respectively. Freshman Ashraf Aziz and senior Brian Serpa both earned the right to compete in the boys 300-hurdles. Another freshman, Thomas Dodd, will represent the boys team in the pole vault. Patterson’s Rebecca Freres capped off a brilliant afternoon of competition as she qualified for sections by finishing first in the girls 100-meter high hurdles, 300-meter low hurdles and triple jump. Freres joined teammates Amber Bond, Krista Loughman and Jessica Ladd in capturing first-place honors in the 4x100-meter relay. The victory made Freres the only four-time first-place winner at the meet. Bond also earned section bids in the 100- and 200-meter races, high jump and pole vault. Distance runner Amanda Moreno took home first-place honors in the girls 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter events. Teammate Melissa Vega also qualified for sections in the 3,200-meter run. Tigers sprinter Ariana Jones earned sections nods in the girls 100- and 200-meter sprints. Thrower Joy Eki-Edo rounded out the Tigers’ sections qualifiers with top-three finishes in both the girls shot put and the girls discus. Sections competition started Tuesday and will continue Thursday at Modesto Junior College. Field events begin at 3 p.m., and track events begin at 6 p.m. To reach Marc Aceves at the Irrigator, call 892-6187 or e-mail him at marc@ pattersonirrigator.com
