25 years ago — May 12, 1983 About 70 firefighters battled a major blaze Monday evening at a tire reconstruction facility just outside the city limits on Sperry Avenue. Flames and smoke could be seen as far away as Modesto and Turlock. Wind gusts reached 45 mph early this week, with the average speed Monday through Wednesday being 30 mph, according to data kept at the Crows Landing Navy base. Ken Carlson of Patterson has won a $100 journalism award at San Jose State University for an article he wrote on Vietnamese immigrants in the Santa Clara Valley. Evan Schut has been elected president of the student body at Patterson High School. For the first time in the modern playoff system, the Patterson High Tigers have made the baseball playoffs. The team, which includes three sophomore regulars and is coached by Tom Maples, finished second in league play to Escalon. Patterson’s frosh-soph team tied for the league championship and finished an excellent 12-3-2. 50 years ago — May 8, 1958 The West Side Cooling Co. has begun shipment of lettuce, with 1,700 cartons going out Tuesday. Young Ronnie Ghisletta was uninjured when static electricity ignited gas fumes as he was pumping gas into a vehicle south of Patterson. A sheet of flames shot hundreds of feet in the air as Ghisletta ran for safety. Helen Bettencourt, daughter of the Tony Panchecos of Patterson, will reign as queen of the upcoming Pentecost Celebration in Crows Landing. Because of torrential rains last month, including in Patterson, Stanislaus County has been declared a disaster area by the federal government. Another wildcat oil well is being drilled in the Vernalis area. 75 years ago — May 12, 1933 Cold weather and showers continue, causing much discomfort in homes where stoves have been shut down and gas disconnected for the summer. Readings have been 20 to 30 degrees below normal. President Roosevelt’s move for this nation to go off the gold standard was discussed at length this week at a meeting of the Patterson Chamber of Commerce. Modesto Junior College’s Herbert Florcken led the discussion. Only minor adjustments in the high school and elementary school budgets have been made for the coming school year. The elementary school principal’s salary will be cut from $2,500 to $2,000, and he will be relieved of part-time teaching duties. Salary for a part-time band instructor will be reduced from $850 to $750. Without the services on the mound of Glenn Hamilton, who wore out his arm this past week with a variety of athletic endeavors, the Patterson High baseball team lost 11-0 to Hughson in the section.
