Curl World celebrates 10 years in business Print E-mail

After a decade at the head of local beauty salon Curl World, Ofelia Rodriguez is celebrating her shop’s 10th anniversary.

Rodriguez purchased the business at 22 S. Del Puerto Ave. in 1998 from previous owner Bertha Haile, who moved out of state.

Many hairstylists have worked at the salon under various owners through the years, and Rodriguez said loyal customers still patronize the business. Curl World is open for men’s, women’s and children’s haircuts, as well as coloring and permanents.

Rodriguez says she enjoys her interactions with her customers. After seeing the grandkids off to school and cleaning the house each day, she arrives at work relaxed at 8:30 a.m.

Before buying Curl World, she worked as a teachers’ aide and at canneries and Patterson Frozen Foods. At first, she thought her English was not very good, but now she says it is hard to keep quiet.

“It’s the best thing that’s happened to me,” Ofelia said. “I hope to stay here another 10 years. I like people — this is my place.”

The building that houses Curl World has undergone many uses over the years. According to the Patterson Township Historical Society’s June 1979 publication “The Gateway,” the first Evans Telephone Co. switchboard was set up in the building, rented from S.A. Cripe (it is still owned by his family). Telephone company founder John Evans, wife Estella Evans and daughter Virginia Evans Williams lived in the back of the building. The building also housed the Evans’ mortuary at one time.

According to “The Gateway,” “In 1921, the telephone office was moved to the rear of the Cripe building to make way for the first office of the new Commercial Bank.

“Meantime the community and business grew and in 1928 the present building on Las Palmas Avenue was built by Evans and the telephone office with a larger switchboard and the mortuary were moved into it.”

Today, those offices, at 420 and 450 W. Las Palmas Ave., respectively, house optometrist Freda Chin’s office and Hillview Funeral Chapel.

Rodriguez invites locals to stop by and say hi at Curl World. The salon is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 22. S. Del Puerto Ave.
