At a glance
WHAT: Patterson Unified School District board meeting
WHEN: 7 p.m. Monday
WHERE: Creekside Middle School, 535 Peregrine Drive
INFO: 895-7700

The Patterson Unified School District board will hear an update on the Dual Language Immersion program and foreign language classes at local schools during Monday night’s meeting.

Miguel Guerrero, director of curriculum, will give an overview of Grayson Charter School’s dual-language program. Students there are taught in English the first half of each day and in Spanish the second half.

At Walnut Grove School, expected to open in August 2009, a similar English- and Spanish-based program will begin with the school’s first kindergarten class and add a grade each year. As students move through the program, they should be able to comprehend and write essays in the second language.

At the high school level, Spanish level 1 and 2 courses still draw the most students, though French is continuing to gain in popularity.

During the same meeting, Mark Wheeler, manager of facilities and construction, will give an update on funding options for the 10-Year Districtwide Facility Master Plan. Wheeler will present a final draft document to the board, with specific recommendations and budget estimates.

i do see the long term goal of getting kids to speak different languages.however i just ? the true intentions.
i know in european schools and in africa children are taught
several different languages.even though in germany they teach kids
french, their society does not cater to non-german speaking citizens.
