25 years ago — May 5, 1983 The winner of this year’s Pinewood Derby Cub Scout competition was Vince Hooper, with cars of Jimmy McNatt and Tony Dolzadelli coming in second and third, respectively. The best overall design award went to Jason Washburn, while Robbie Fields took home the award for unique design. Charlie Longo of rural Patterson is $1,000 richer this week after receiving a reward. Working at a Gustine-area dairy, he found a hunting dog valued at $22,000 that belonged to a kennel in Los Banos. Jeff McCarthy has been named Patterson High’s new football coach, succeeding Carl Selee, who held the post the past 16 seasons. 50 years ago — May 1, 1958 The local Chamber of Commerce is asking the board of supervisors not to move the work camp near Frank Raines Park in Del Puerto Canyon. State officials will be here next week to inspect the proposed roadway through the canyon that would link Patterson and San Jose. The Patterson High Tigers defeated Escalon, 9-5, on the local diamond. They were helped by a triple play, Merwyn Flowers to Doyle McElhern to Gerald Jackson. PHS pitcher Richard Stewart homered in the fourth. 75 years ago — May 5, 1933 The high school campus is looking like a convalescent camp this week. Johnny Evans broke his leg and Ernest Correa an arm, the latter by cranking a car. Then Hilmar Ingebretsen suffered an arm break, also by cranking, and William Friedrich broke a leg while practicing pole vaulting. Longtime Patterson-area residents can’t remember an April when temperatures have been this low. Heavy coats were still being worn at the end of the month. The cold weather postponed the adult softball season.
