“We would love to close out the season with a win against Hilmar. That would just be the icing on the cake.” — Cade Tomasegovich PHS varsity girls soccer coach GUSTINE — First-year Patterson High girls soccer coach Cade Tomasegovich had several goals lined up for his young team at the start of the season. ![]() Patterson’s Geraldi Salcido vies for position with Gustine’s Luz Perez (right) during the Tigers' win against the Redskins on Wednesday. Photo by Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator Patterson completed its season series sweep over Gustine on Wednesday, cruising to a relatively effortless 5-1 win over the beleaguered host Redskins. The win improves the Tigers’ record to a respectable 7-3-3 in the WAC with just two games left to play in the regular season. The Tigers wasted little time Wednesday, going to work early on Gustine’s defense and pelting the Redskins’ netkeeper with 16 first-half shots on goal. Tomasegovich admitted that the Tigers came into Wednesday’s game both confident and cocksure. “It can be hard to keep the team focused for a game like this,” Tomasegovich said. “We came in pretty lighthearted, but we still had a game to play, and this was still a league game. You never know what can happen.” The windy weather conditions knocked down or misdirected several of Patterson’s early scoring chances. Still, Patterson’s Adriana Araisa eventually maneuvered close enough to the Redskins’ goal, sliding in the Tigers’ first score of the game. Teammate Genesis Barraza followed with a goal of her own, lifting the Tigers to a 2-0 advantage. Patterson seemingly lapsed a bit under its lead, allowing the Redskins to run the field and manufacture a brief rally of their own. The Tigers’ goalie mishandled a Gustine penalty kick — the ball momentarily escaping her grasp — giving the Redskins their first real scoring opportunity of the game. The loose ball trickled in front of Patterson’s goal, where it was booted in from pointblank range, trimming the Tigers’ lead to 2-1. The Gustine momentum was short-lived, however. Patterson’s Jessica Herrera immediately answered with a blast to the back of the Redskins’ net, putting the Tigers back out in front, 3-1. Araisa struck once more, just before the end of the first half, providing more than enough breathing room for her team. The wind continued to take its toll on both the ball and the players in the second half. Strong gusts made things difficult for both teams to execute at the offensive end — a factor that allowed the Tigers to rest on its lead. The Tigers’ Geraldi Salcido capped off a convincingly one-sided affair with a late score, finishing off the outmatched Redskins. “We want to win out in the remainder of our games,” Tomasegovich said. “We would love to close out the season with a win against Hilmar. That would just be the icing on the cake.” To reach Marc Aceves at the Irrigator, call 892-6187 or e-mail him at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
