The Patterson High girls soccer team preserved its season sweep of visiting Orestimba on Wednesday, defeating the Warriors, 3-1. The win also ended a two-game Tigers’ winless streak, improving their Western Athletic Conference record to 6-3-3. ![]() Patterson forward Jessica Herrera (right) gets a push from an Orestimba defender during a physical game Wednesday that resulted in two players being suspended from play. Photo by Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator The cold and blustery conditions hardly helped. “The wind makes it hard for us to track down the ball,” Patterson coach Cade Tomasegovich said. “We’ve had to deal with these types of slow starts before. It’s tougher for us because our halfbacks like to send the ball up the field to our forwards.” Patterson eventually zeroed in on its target, pummeling the Warriors’ goalkeeper with shot after shot. The Tigers’ Adriana Araisa was the first player to find the back of the net, striking just before the end of the first half. Araisa found herself at the doorstep of Orestimba’s goal, seizing the opportunity to boot in a point-blank shot and giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. “(Because Orestimba was undermanned) they needed their best player to play goalie,” Tomasegovich said. “Without her, they had no control of the field and the tempo definitely changed in our favor.” The Tigers rested on their lead in the second half, allowing Orestimba to collectively rebound. ![]() senior Teresa Azevedo follows in on a loose ball in front of the Warriors’ goal before Orestimba’s Karina Lopez secures the save. The physical nature of the game boiled over midway through the second half. Patterson senior captain Jeanette Ortega and an Orestimba defender got in a fight and appeared to exchange blows, leading to the automatic ejection of the two girls. The temporary lapse in play seemed to take its toll on the Warriors. “I think that Orestimba broke down after that incident more than we did,” Tomasegovich said. “We held it together pretty well. Even though there was some adversity to deal with, we were able to get back in to the game.” Patterson’s Jessica Herrera sparked the Tigers’ surge, scoring the team’s second goal just minutes after the interruption. She followed with her second goal of the game — a bending shot from nearly 10 yards out — sealing the win for the Tigers. ![]() PHS junior varsity soccer player Taryn Hale breaks away down the line, away from Orestimba defender Erica Garcia, during the JV’s 6-0 win over the Warriors. Following the game, Tomasegovich learned of a possible season-ending suspension that could be handed down by league officials because of the seriousness of the fighting infractions. “I’m hoping that the suspension is just two games (the league minimum),” he said. “(Jeanette’s) our captain. She’s a leader. She’s one of our best players. The situation is out of our hands, though. Hopefully, the decision handed down will not be too harsh.” (JV) Patterson 6, Orestimba 0 The Patterson girls JV soccer team trounced visiting Orestimba on Wednesday, 6-0. Yessica Cantero led the Tigers with three first-half goals. Teammates Nicole Guenther, Blanca Maldonado and Lauren Schryver also netted one goal a piece.
