Musical styles showcased
Two different musical styles will fill the air next month at the Westside Theatre, 1331 Main St., in Newman.

Tribu, an indigenous group from Mexico, will perform May 2. Known throughout Mexico and growing in popularity in the United States, Tribu’s musicians have a goal to recreate the ceremonial music of the ancient Aztecs for contemporary audiences. Founded in 1970, the group has researched the music of Mesoamerica more than 15 years and has created an array of sounds from natural objects, such as rock whistles, wood flutes, animal-skin drums and shells.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show begins at 8. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students or seniors older than 60.

The next day, Rita Hosking and Cousin Jack will perform mountain roots music and ballads.
Hosking, who was raised in the mountains of Shasta County, blends folk, country and bluegrass into passionate sounds and stories. Her musical experience began as a child at church, under the wings of an old-time jug band.

Hosking began writing songs at age 20 to play on an old Gibson guitar her friends gave her. Her band, Cousin Jack, is an ensemble of Sean Feder on banjo and guitar, Bill Dakin on upright bass and guitar and Andy Lentz on fiddle.

Doors open at 7 p.m. May 3, and the show begins at 8. Tickets are $14 general admission and $17 reserved seating.
