The Patterson boys swim team remains undefeated in the Mother Lode League this season, thanks to a 88-30 win Friday over the visiting Bullfrogs of Bret Harte. Not to be outdone, the Tigers’ girls team also posted a victory over Bret Harte, 97-51. “I expected to win the meet against Bret Harte because we are much bigger than they are,” Patterson coach Lew Boyle said. “But I didn’t expect the kids to swim as well as they did. We kicked some serious butt.” Along with the dual team wins, a handful of Patterson’s top swimmers earned their way into sections competition. Patterson’s Mark Rasmussen earned a spot in sections, qualifying in the boys 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.32 seconds. The Tigers boys 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay team of David Klemme, Patrick Gonsales, Richard Carney and Kyle VanRiper also swam into the postseason with times of 1:39.04 and 3:39.90, respectively. Patterson’s Anthony Becerra finished first in the boys 200 freestyle (2:24.55). Teammate Peyton Sonnefeld came away with first-place finishes in the boys 100 freestyle (1:02.17) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.30). The Tigers’ Brenda VanRiper earned first-place nods in the girls 200 freestyle (2:34.95) and 100 backstroke (1:20.76) Patterson’s Andie Coble captured a top finish in the girls 100 freestyle (1:10.21), and Sam Pansoy earned a first-place finish in the girls 500 freestyle (7:33.68). Teammates VanRiper, Lyndzie Garro and Claire Flatley joined Coble in winning the girls 200 freestyle relay (2:07.06). “Over the season, every kid that has strapped on a Speedo has improved his or her times significantly,” Boyle said. “That’s a real credit to all of the work these kids have put in, and I am really very proud of them.”
