Artist revives lifelong hobby in Patterson Print E-mail

When Patricia Rich moved to Patterson three years ago, she decided she didn’t want to look at white walls in her new home.

So, she dove back into a hobby she loved and began to paint.

“I have always had an inclination for art,” Rich said. “I have not had any education along those lines.”

This month, some of her artwork is on display at the Patterson Library, 46 N. Salado Ave. Her display features works such as “Pink Bloom Falls,” “Summer in Central Valley,” “Cow and Calf Basking” and “Bob’s Mill,” all done in acrylic, and “Old Oak Clock” and “Our Old Mill,” both in pen and ink.

Rich’s works have already drawn the attention of library patrons.

“Many of our customers have commented on Patricia’s paintings,” said Sandie Segoviano, a library assistant. “Their favorite is ‘Summer in the Central Valley.’ The sky-blue color radiates from the lightest blues in the horizon to the darkest and seems to draw you into the painting, which has a very calming effect.”

Librarian Kelly Thompson said Rich’s works brighten the library.

“Patricia’s detailed pen drawings and colorful acrylic art create a bright corner in the library,” Thompson said. “We’ve had many positive comments in the short time that her art has been displayed.”

Rich says she’s had an artistic knack for many years and she loves to sculpt, sew and crochet, as well as paint and draw. She loves gardening and also creates table-top and indoor fountains.

Most of Rich’s artwork is done late at night and in the early morning hours, when everyone is asleep, or whenever she can snatch a few minutes during the day.

“Back in Trinidad, when I got bored, I would sketch,” said Rich, who attributes all her talent to God.

She left Trinidad, the largest of many islands that make up the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, and moved to in San Jose. For many of the years she spent there, she did nothing artistic.
But when she moved to the West Side in June 2005, Rich rediscovered her old hobby. Three years later, the walls in her home are full, and she has given some works away to her friends.

“It’s time for fresh stuff,” Rich said.

The local resident has won a number of awards for her work, including the Stanislaus County Fair 2007 awards for first in drawing with pen and second in acrylic.

Four months ago, she joined the local Del Puerto Art Group, a collection of artists who meet monthly to criticize one another’s work and lend support.

Rich also displayed her work at this month’s downtown Patterson Art and Wine Gala.

For now, Rich is waiting for the return of the summer weather that inspired her most popular library hanging.

“I can’t wait for the skies to be blue,” Rich said. “That’s what I like about the Central Valley — the rich blue skies contrasting with the puffy white clouds.”
