Improvement, team focus buoy PHS swimmers Patterson swim coach Lew Boyle has seen dramatic improvement in his young team this season. ![]() PHS junior Sam Pansoy jumps in to swim the last leg of the 4x100-yard freestyle relay, as teammate Jeune Shelton finishes her 100-yard leg. VanRiper previously qualified to challenge at sections in both the 100-backstroke and the 500-freestyle. “Kyle has been amazing this year,” assistant swim coach Lauren Cozart said. “He has really stepped his game up. He is a year-round swimmer who has done his best times at our meets.” Patterson’s Patrick Gonsales, Richard Carney and David Klemme will join VanRiper at sections, representing the Tigers in the boys 200-freestyle relay team. “A couple of my relay kids had never seen a competitive swim meet until last year,” Boyle said. “For that same team to qualify for sections is just an awesome accomplishment.” That same foursome just missed qualifying for sections in the 400-freestyle relay Wednesday. Their time of 3:43.49 was a second off the mark needed to advance. Daniel Mejia, meanwhile, dropped 15 seconds off his best time in the 500-freestyle, finishing in 6:46.66. The Patterson boys remain undefeated in league matches this season. The girls also had their share of victories Wednesday. Sam Pansoy shaved 13 seconds from her best time in the 500-freestyle, finishing in 7:31.79. Teammate Allegria Bos dropped 10 seconds from her best time in the same event, finishing in 7:45.66. Kelly Nelson showed a seven-second improvement in the 200-individual medley with a time of 3:32, while teammate Ng Srisakdi — a foreign exchange student with no previous swimming experience — finished the 50-freestyle in 38.7 seconds. ![]() Senior Michael Vargas swims the anchor leg of the boys 4x400-yard freestyle relay. The kids cheer each other along, and it’s created a great dynamic between them all, from freshmen to seniors.” With so many of his swimmers lacking a background in aquatic sports, Boyle is thrilled with what he has seen this season. “The improvement some of these kids have made to going from non-swimmers to on the verge of the Mother Lode championship is a testament to their capacity for hard work, to their dedication to the sport and to occasionally listening to the coaches,” Boyle said. Tickets for the event are $10 and include a hot dog, beverage and open access to the pool throughout the evening. Steven Spielberg’s 1975 Oscar-winner, “Jaws,” also will be screened at the event. “Every year we provide the swimsuits and all of the equipment for all of the kids,” Patterson assistant coach Lauren Cozart said. “This is a great opportunity to give back to the swim team and to have a little bit of fun doing it, too.” “It will be a great time for all,” swim coach Lew Boyle said. “It will be a well-supervised evening that will provide good clean fun for all of the kids.”
