Pipe replacement gets started Print E-mail

Work to replace sewer and water mains in old-town Patterson has begun.

This month, GDR Engineering crews started work on the project, which engineers describe as Patterson’s largest undertaking since the town’s founding. When complete, the new pipes should increase water pressure to customers and stop many of the leaks and breaks city employees routinely battle.

Surveying has already started in some parts of old town. The first phase of the project will handle pipes north of Las Palmas Avenue and south of Salado Creek. GDR estimates construction will begin in November and run through August 2009.

People who live in the project area will face some hiccups as the water system is upgraded. Many will likely lose water service temporarily. Officials will give 48 hours’ notice before anyone’s water is turned off.

Construction will also block some roads, and some residents might not be able to get into or out of their driveways at times. Project manager Ken Irwin said those folks will have 48 hours’ warning before their property is blocked, and driveways will always be clear by the end of the workday.

Those with special needs can call Irwin at 892-3414. Information is also available at www.oldtownpatterson.com . Irwin encouraged anyone with questions or concerns to contact GDR Engineering, 538-3360 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

At times, engineers may need to access private property. When that’s the case, crews will knock on doors and tell residents before going on their property. Workers will never enter people’s homes. Residents are asked to call police if anyone claims to need to enter a home as part of the construction.

When the work is finished, the city plans to make the same improvements to the southern part of old-town Patterson. It is not clear when that stage will follow Phase 1.
