CLUBS YLI keeps busy with winter projects The Young Ladies Institute of Sacred Heart Catholic Church had a “Winter Wonderland” meeting in January for the official visit of De Nova Barrett, the grand president of the Young Ladies Grand Institute. Members wore their favorite scarves and hats, and Mimi Maring and her committee planned a potluck dinner with a special blend of hot chocolate. Barrett has called for all YLI chapters to support Catholic Charities this year. Monica Ramos, program director of Catholic Charities of Modesto, was guest speaker. The Young Ladies Institute is a group of Roman Catholic women who help others in the organization, the church and the community. The group attended Mass together on the third Saturday of Lent on Feb. 23. After Mass, chairwoman Lena Peters planned a dinner at Golden Lion Chinese Restaurant for 25 members and guests. Kitti Stehli was chairwoman of the March meeting, when the local institute hosted District Deputy Patricia Maguire. Mary Lisa Kuhn and Theresa Lara served soups and a light dessert. Members gave canned goods and nonperishable items to support St. Vincent de Paul Society’s March Against Hunger. Stehli also chaired the March 16 Palm Sunday bake sale, which the group called very successful. The YLI welcomed two new members, Irene Bettencourt in January and Anna Marie Arreola in March. The YLI made donations this winter to the Westside Food Pantry, St. Vincent de Paul Society and Catholic Charities. Sarah Brooks reported that YLI adopted a family with four young girls and gave them clothing and toys for Christmas. YLI members are planning a cake walk at Sacred Heart Spring Bazaar in late April and a Mother’s Day dinner in mid-May. For information: 892-2963. KUDOS Teacher gets field-trip grant Lucy Zamora, a Las Palmas Elementary School teacher, recently received a $1,000 Target Field Trip Grant. Zamora, a second-grade teacher at the school, was one of the teachers chosen from more than 16,000 applicants from around the country. Zamora plans to use the grant to bring students to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, with the date to be announced. The Target Field Trip Grant program began in 2006. This year, the retailer has distributed 1,600 grants totaling $1.6 million. Grant money may be used for transportation, entry fees, supplies and equipment and resource materials. In the application for the grant, teachers had to include the description of the field trip and its objectives, the benefits to the students, the tie-in to school curriculum and how many students would use the grant. Winning field trips must be taken in the 2008 calendar year.
