One of Patterson’s landmark businesses, La Perla Tapatia on Las Palmas Avenue, has closed its doors.

The 600-square-foot store opened in 1980, the first link in a chain of nine Mexican market-bakery-deli stores in Stanislaus County. Manuel and Bertha Villa founded La Perla Tapatia, which now has 270 employees and is one of the largest Latino-run enterprises in the Modesto area.

The owners said customers’ goodwill and memories have made the recent closing of the Las Palmas Avenue store even tougher for the family.

“Our heart and soul will always be here,” said Gabriel Villa, son of the founders and the firm’s general manager. “But we will continue to serve our valued customers just a few blocks away.”

Patterson’s other La Perla Tapatia, 201 S. El Circulo, will remain open, as will stores in Riverbank, Modesto, Turlock, Hughson and Ceres.

Villa said the family was not able to reach terms with the landlord at the Las Palmas location.

“It’s something beyond our control,” Villa said. “We would have loved to have continued serving our loyal customers at our original store. It was a tradition we cared about and valued.”

La Perla Tapatia stores are famed for made-from-scratch pastries and deli goods prepared each day. Villa said his mother is in charge of quality control and inspects all the stores daily.

While La Perla Tapatia, which employs 85 Villa family members, now has one less store, Villa said the business is still growing, and an upcoming “big project” will soon be announced.

Store stocks beauty supplies
Patterson Marketplace shopping center now houses another new business, California Beauty Supply, owned by Emil and Evelyn Gamble of Modesto.

The Gambles’ daughter, Natalie, runs the shop, which opened in mid-February in the same shopping center as Save Mart Supermarkets.

“My parents have owned the chain of salons for 13 years in Stanislaus County,” she said. “We opened it because we saw the need over here.”

California Beauty Supply stocks professional hair-care products for men, women and children — even pets. Hairbrushes, mirrors, flat irons, curling irons and facial products line its shelves.

Four stations are set up for hairstylists, and the beauty salon will open in a couple of weeks.

Meanwhile, Gamble invites folks to see what the store has to offer.

“Our prices are reasonable prices,” she said. “A lot of people come in and say, ‘Your prices are good.’”
California Beauty Supply, 1045 Sperry Ave., Ste. A, is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Car renewals done locally
Best for Less Insurance has added a new dimension at its Patterson shop: The company now offers state vehicle registration services, saving residents a trip out of town.

Those services consist of initial registration; registration renewal; transfer of ownership; electronic issuing of tags, stickers and registration certificates; commercial and non-commercial vehicle transfers; planned non-operational renewals and transfers; and state-mandated dealership transcations.

Nicolas Hernandez, a 1985 Patterson High School graduate, owns the local business.

“We do everything — life, commercial, health business, auto and dealerships covering the West Side area,” he said.

Cheryl Stewart of Best for Less said many people in the area know Hernandez and stop by.

“That’s why a lot of people come here — Nick gives them that personal care,” she said. “We want to be a one-stop shop.”

Best for Less Insurance, 22 N. Del Puerto Ave., is open from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Fund family ranks at the top
Linda Murdock of Waddell and Reed in Patterson is proud that the Waddell and Reed Advisors Funds and Ivy Funds earned the top ranking on a list published by Barron’s, the Dow Jones business and financial weekly publication.

Waddell and Reed is a 71-year-old company that offers various investment products and services.
“We have a Waddell and Reed office right here in Patterson,” Murdock said.

She invites folks to stop by the office at 355 W. Las Palmas Ave. or call her at 892-9559.
