Patterson High School junior Samantha Leslie took first place in Patterson Rotary Club’s annual speech contest Feb. 27 at Las Palmas Grill. Samantha Leslie Leslie, daughter of Michael and Sharmaine Wilson, took honorable mention at the Rotary Club Area Speech Contest March 5 at Community Presbyterian Church in Gustine. That competition included Newman, Gustine and Los Banos Rotary speech contest winners. Area winners will compete in the finals April 5 at California State University, Stanislaus, in Turlock. Patterson High senior Veronica Plaugher, daughter of Robert and Norma Plaugher, was runner-up in the local lcontest. Cole Halseth, son of Michael and Mary Ann Halseth, was third, and Melissa Vega, daughter of Rafael Vega and Maria Valdez, received honorable mention. Halseth and Vega are PHS juniors. Rotarian Mary Martin was contest chairwoman.
