Brother Ken Lund, C.M., joined the staff at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in mid-January and coordinates religious education in the parish. He also acts as a liaison with the St. Vincent De Paul Society and works with English-speaking adult confirmandi. Lund, a native of Chicago, earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Loyola University Seminary in Chicago. He became a Vincentian brother in August 1975. “A brother is a non-ordained member of the Vincentian Fathers and Brothers who takes the vows of chastity and obedience,” Lund explained. “Brothers do everything a priest does, except say Mass.” Over the years, his duties with the Vincentians have varied. First, Lund took care of 22 seminary buildings and rental houses on 300 acres in Illinois. But he particularly wanted to work with the poor, so he moved on to St. Vincent De Paul Parish in downtown St. Louis. There, he did a lot of social outreach and served meals to the homeless and hungry. “Depending on the time of year, we would have from 200 to 400 people in an hour to an hour and a half,” he said. “We never sent anyone away.” Lund had always wanted to learn Spanish and took classes at a community college during that time. Seeking to improve his fluency in the language, he then enrolled in a four-month intensive language program in San Antonio, Texas. In 1986, he went to St. Fidelus Church on the northwest side of Chicago, where he stayed until 1995. He mainly worked by visiting the sick and serving as director of Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults in English and Spanish. The parish also had a school that had closed after the diocese ran out of money to support it. That year, Lund changed focus and received permission to get his master’s degree in theology, with a specialty in religious education. He studied at St. Louis University in St. Louis, headquarters in the Midwest for the Vincentian religious order. From 1997 to 2003, Lund ministered in Cape Springfield, Mo. He traveled 200 miles each day in his job as a sacramental preparer, teaching Spanish-speakers in their homes in preparation for sacraments. “In the six years I was there, I drove over 300,000 miles,” Lund said. “I was kind of like St. Paul, but I was using a car instead of using a horse, going from town to town.” After six years, Lund wasreassigned to Leadville, Colo., where he worked in Latino ministry. Two parishes in that town, Annunciation and St. Joseph’s, joined together because of the lack of a priest, first called The Catholic Community of Leadville and later known as Holy Family Parish. Besides bringing together the Irish, Slovenian and Latino folks in the parish, Lund shoveled a lot of snow. The Rev. Bernie Quinn, pastor of Sacred Heart Church is happy to have Lund on the staff. “Over these years, he has had a wide experience of ministry in inner-city and rural settings in English- and Spanish-speaking communities,” Quinn said. “He is a steady and dependable co-worker dedicated to proclaiming the Christian gospel by word and example. God has blessed us with his presence in our parish community."
