At a glance
Patterson’s third annual Relay For Life is about three months away, but it’s not too early for organizers to plan the May 17 and 18 event. The 24-hour fundraiser, conducted in communities across the country, brings together those who have been touched by cancer to fight the disease. West Siders will form teams, solicit donations and take turns walking around the Patterson Community Stadium track. Most folks pitch tents and camp out overnight.Last year, the local relay took in more than $100,000 in donations from West Side residents, and chairman John Salvador wants to repeat that success. “Currently, there are 15 teams registered,” Salvador said. “Our goal is to have 40 teams, 80 cancer survivors and raise $100,000.” Patterson’s first relay raised $70,000. There’s still plenty of time to join an existing team or even sign up to form a new team, officials say. One way to do that is to attend a meeting of team captains at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Patterson Library, 46 N. Salado Ave. Teams are limited to 24 people and must keep at least one member on the track throughout the 24 hours of the relay. Volunteers are already in action collecting donations and pledges. Salvador said area churches, schools, businesses and families are invited to participate. The early-bird team registration fee is $100 for teams that sign up by March 19. The Relay For Life committee will get together with new teams and guide them through the process. Entertainment chairwoman Sonia Musson is looking for local talent to perform at the relay. Musson is planning a multicultural theme and already has Portuguese dancers on the program, along with dance groups from Westside Academy in Gustine. Bands, church choirs, singers, dancers and even preschoolers who want to sing a song are invited to volunteer. Karate and gymnastics groups are welcome. Musson is also seeking businesses and individuals to sponsor entertainment. In celebration, in memory Cancer survivors will lead the first way around the high school track during the Survivors Lap that begins each Relay For Life. All survivors are invited to contact the Relay For Life committee to sign up for special T-shirts for the weekend event and make reservations for the Saturday-morning survivor breakfast hosted by the Soroptimist and Rotary Clubs. Hundreds of luminarias will spread their glow around the track in honor of survivors and in memory of those who have lost their battle with cancer. Anyone who would like to dedicate a luminaria may send in a $10 donation. Relay For Life also needs corporate sponsors to help defray the cost of the event.
