A Patterson man could serve 50 years to life in prison after being convicted Friday of the assault and rape of a Patterson woman while burglarizing her home in 2006. ![]() Anaya “It was a difficult case, but the jury worked very hard,” said Deputy District Attorney Annette Rees, who prosecuted the case. Anaya was matched in a photo lineup with a police sketch in July 2007 after the rape had taken place at a Patterson home Dec. 15, 2006. Anaya knocked on the door of the house where the 23-year-old victim lived on the day of the crime, and she answered it, according to the district attorney’s office. The Patterson man said he had a package, and the victim opened the screen door. Anaya, who did not know the woman, pushed his way into the home and chased her through the kitchen into a bathroom. As she ran through the kitchen, the woman grabbed a knife, which Anaya took away and held to her throat. He slapped her and raped her in a bathroom of the home before fleeing. The victim was treated at Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto, where Stanislaus County Sheriff’s detectives interviewed her and got a description of the man. Two days later, Detective Sebron Banks of the Modesto Police Department worked with the victim to create a composite sketch of the suspect. That sketch appeared in local news outlets, and the sheriff’s department received several tips. It was not until July 2007, however, that Anaya was matched with the sketch by an anonymous tip and the victim had a chance to look at a photo lineup. The victim identified the rapist at the time after six months and five earlier lineups. “I had to catch my breath — I thought I was going to faint,” the victim said, according to the district attorney’s office. A few seconds later, she said, “That’s him.” The case was particularly difficult because Anaya wore a condom, and grasped the knife on top of the victim’s hand, Rees said, so there was no DNA and no fingerprints were available. Sgt. Alan Tate of Patterson Police Services said that the department sent on a certificate honoring Banks’ work in creating the composite sketch. “It was good teamwork,” Tate said. The jury deliberated for two days before deciding Anaya was guilty. He also had prior convictions under the three strikes law, after being convicted in 2001 of three counts of attempted spousal rape, leading to the extended sentence.
