The PHS wrestling team will be shooting for a share of the Trans-Valley League title, its first league mat championship, at this week’s league tournament at Hilmar. The Tigers hold a 13-4 dual meet record, losing only to Hughson in a 29-26 thriller. Don Little of Westley roared his Plymouth Road Runner to victory in last weekend’s stock class Winternationals drag event at Pomona. He closed 117.64 mph in 11.43 seconds. His racing team includes Fred and Susan Frias, with Harry Holton as his sponsor. 50 years ago — Feb. 6, 1958 The state Division of Highways has tentatively selected Sperry Avenue as an access road for the proposed West Side Freeway. Del Puerto Hospital’s occupancy rate set a new record in 1957, climbing to 77.6 percent with 1,438 patients admitted for a total of 7,084 days. The hospital welcomed 266 new babies this past year. Patterson High wrestlers Carl Schali, Larry Butler and Ralph Hugo have qualified for the section meet. 75 years ago — Feb. 10, 1933 The West Stanislaus Irrigation District has cut salaries 25 percent and stopped hiring of extra help because of poor economic conditions and numerous tax delinquencies within the district. The monthly payroll was trimmed from $920 to $690 for the five employees. District directors previously had made a minor cut. The local fire department is making plans for the upcoming baseball season and will soon make improvements to the diamond. A partial season last year brought in $112, with $50 used as half payment for the lighting system. Patterson Irrigator archives
