 A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday for Joe F. Vargas Jr. of Newman, who died Sunday at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.
Mr. Vargas, 95, was a native of Crows Landing and the son of the late Joseph F. and Frances Vargas. He called Newman home for 63 years. He previously lived in La Selva Beach for 10 years and in Patterson before that.
Mr. Vargas was a self-employed milk hauler for 25 years and hauled milk for Golden State Creamery. He was also a walnut farmer and held a job as a steel worker in La Selva Beach. Mr. Vargas was the caretaker of the F.D.E.S. Corp. in Newman for 30 years. He was a parishioner of St. Joachim’s Catholic Church of Newman and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2517, the Brotherhood of Saint Anthony, and I.D.E.S., S.E.S., F.D.E.S. and the C.M.B., all Portuguese organizations.
Mr. Vargas is survived by two sons, Dan and Tom Vargas, both of Newman; three daughters, Dorothy Vargas of Newman, Joyce Ananos of Pleasant Hill and Jeanette Pires of Turlock; two sisters, Evelyn Vargas and Madeline Correia, both of Patterson; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of
72 years, Isabelle A. Vargas; two sons, Richard and Henry Vargas; two grandsons and a granddaughter; and three brothers and three sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church, 1121 Main St., in Newman. Burial will follow in Hills Ferry Cemetery, 1334 W. Stuhr Road, in Newman.
Visitation will be observed from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church, followed by a rosary at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions in Mr. Vargas’ name may be sent to Knights of Columbus Council No. 2517, P.O. Box 211, Newman 95360; or the Newman Fire Department, 1162 N St., Newman 95360.
Hillview Funeral Chapel, 1258 R St.,
in Newman, is handling arrangements.
